Rumsfeld Resigns

Donald Rumsfeld, one of the most popular men of this millenium, has resigned today according to President W.  This move on the part of the Secretary of Defense caught many off-guard after years of calling for his resignation and being ridiculed by the administration.  Many believe it is part of an overall strategy by the Republicans to make the most of the recent power shift in Congress (and possibly the Senate) by placating the Democrats and others among their harsher critics.

One thing is for certain, whether one agreed with the man's policies or not.  Today this country has lost a certain irony one can only achieve by waging war against a man you shook hands with on camera.  We've lost one of the wittiest, crotechety and downright interesting press conference hosts ever to face CNN's correspondants. Mr. Rumsfeld, you will be missed.

Especially since Bush has a habit of replacing cabinet members with equally (if not moreso) undesirable people.  See: Attorney General.

And frankly, the press secretaries have gone straight to hell since Ari Fleischer.  Tony Snow's John Kerry-bashing bit about "I don't see where you would insert the word 'Us'" was simply the most pathetic thing I've seen on the News in a month or more, and that's saying something because it far-and-away beat out the stupidity even of Kerry's original "joke"

So once again, Don, good journies and may your replacement, former CIA chief Robert Gates, be at least half as fun to watch as you were, because I don't hear anything else about him I find remotely good.
